Hand & Wrist

Hand and Wrist Surgery

The hand and wrist are complex — 27 bones, multiple joints, and a network of tendons, nerves, and blood vessels. Problems here can affect your ability to work, care for yourself, and perform daily tasks.

Symptoms

Common Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling in the fingers, especially at night
  • Weakness when gripping or pinching
  • A finger that catches or locks when bending
  • Pain at the base of the thumb, or swelling after a fall
  • Visible deformity of a finger or wrist
  • Difficulty with fine tasks such as buttoning clothes or writing

Causes & Risk Factors

What’s Behind Them

  • Repetitive motion — typing, assembly work, and manual labour can cause overuse injuries.
  • Trauma — falls, sports injuries, and accidents cause fractures, dislocations, and tendon injuries.
  • Ageing — arthritis and tendon problems become more common with age.
  • Medical conditions — diabetes raises the risk of carpal tunnel and trigger finger; rheumatoid arthritis affects hand joints.

What We Treat

Conditions We Treat

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Compression of the median nerve at the wrist — numbness, tingling, and weakness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.

Trigger Finger

A tendon catches in its sheath, causing the finger to lock in a bent position.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Inflammation of tendons on the thumb side of the wrist — pain with gripping and thumb movement.

Wrist & Finger Fractures

Breaks in the radius, ulna, carpal bones, or phalanges — splinting, pinning, or surgery depending on alignment.

Thumb Arthritis

Wear and tear at the base of the thumb — pain with pinching and gripping.

Ganglion Cysts & Tendon Injuries

Fluid-filled lumps near joints, and cuts or ruptures of the tendons that control finger movement.

Treatment · Step One

Non-Surgical Options

  • Splinting — wrist splints for carpal tunnel; finger splints for trigger finger or fractures.
  • Medications — anti-inflammatory drugs for pain and swelling.
  • Corticosteroid injections — reduce inflammation in carpal tunnel, trigger finger, and arthritis.
  • Hand therapy — exercises to improve strength, flexibility, and function.
  • Activity modification — ergonomic changes and avoiding aggravating movements.

Treatment · When Needed

When Surgery May Be Needed

Surgery is considered for carpal tunnel that does not improve with splinting and injections, a trigger finger that stays locked, fractures with poor alignment, tendon injuries needing repair, or arthritis causing severe pain and disability.

  • Carpal tunnel release; trigger finger release
  • Fracture fixation with pins, plates, or screws
  • Tendon repair
  • Joint fusion or replacement for severe arthritis

Restoring Function

The goal is to restore your grip,
your dexterity, and your independence.

Red Flags

Seek Emergency Care

Go to an emergency department if you have:

  • A deep cut that may have injured tendons or nerves
  • Inability to bend or straighten a finger after an injury
  • Visible deformity after a fall or impact
  • Fingers that are pale, blue, or numb after an injury
  • Signs of infection — increasing redness, swelling, warmth, or pus
